SNOOKER: Scottish Open Snooker 2026: Qualifiers, Edinburgh Dates and What Fans Need to Know

Snooker fans in Scotland have another big week to look forward to as the 2026 Scottish Open makes its way towards Edinburgh.

The tournament is scheduled to take place at Meadowbank Sports Centre from 14 to 20 December 2026, bringing another week of professional snooker to the Scottish capital.

When are the Scottish Open qualifiers?

The 2026 Scottish Open qualifying matches are scheduled for 20–23 September 2026.

The qualifying rounds are due to take place at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester, rather than at the Edinburgh venue.

For the players involved, these matches are an important opportunity to secure a place in the final stages of the ranking event.

When will the full line-up be known?

The qualifying draw has been published, but the completed Edinburgh field depends on the results of those matches.

With qualifying running until 23 September, the final picture will become clearer once the matches have been completed.

That gives fans another reason to keep an eye on the qualifying results. Several players will be competing for the chance to take their place alongside the established names in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh prepares for another Scottish Open

After the qualifying stage, attention will turn to Meadowbank Sports Centre.

The main tournament is scheduled for 14–20 December, with the final set for Sunday, 20 December.

The Edinburgh venue also hosted the 2025 Scottish Open. Chris Wakelin won that tournament, defeating Chang Bingyu 9–2 in the final.

Wakelin's victory was the second ranking title of his professional career.

Why the tournament matters

The Scottish Open forms part of snooker's Home Nations Series, which features ranking tournaments in Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

That makes the Edinburgh tournament an important part of the professional calendar.

For established players, it provides another opportunity to compete for ranking points and silverware. For those coming through qualifying, meanwhile, reaching the main event can provide a valuable opportunity to compete on a bigger stage.

What can fans expect in Edinburgh?

The tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, 14 December, with matches continuing throughout the week before the competition reaches its concluding stages.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will determine who lifts the Scottish Open trophy at Meadowbank.

The exact match-ups will depend on the completed draw, so fans should check the official tournament information as the event gets closer.

The road to Edinburgh starts in Leicester

Qualifying may not receive the same attention as the later rounds, but it plays an important role in determining who reaches the Scottish Open's final stages.

From 20 September, players will compete in Leicester with a place in Edinburgh at stake.

By the time qualifying concludes on 23 September, fans will have a much clearer idea of the field heading to Meadowbank in December.

That journey from Leicester to Edinburgh is the first chapter of the 2026 Scottish Open, with the tournament set to provide another week of professional snooker in Scotland before the year draws to a close.

Scottish Open 2026: Key dates

Qualifying: 20–23 September 2026

Qualifying venue: Mattioli Arena, Leicester

Main tournament: 14–20 December 2026

Main venue: Meadowbank Sports Centre, Edinburgh

Final: 20 December 2026

Tournament schedules can change, so fans should check the official World Snooker Tour information for the latest dates, sessions and match details.

Nairobi Makes History: Kenya to Host World Athletics Championships in 2029
Nairobi has been selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, marking the first time Africa will stage the sport’s premier global competition. ">The decision was announced by World Athletics on Tuesday following a council meeting in Budapest, Hungary. Nairobi’s bid was selected ahead of competing proposals from London, Munich and Rome.

The announcement is a landmark moment for Kenya and African athletics. Kenya has a long and distinguished association with track and field, particularly through its success in middle- and long-distance running, but the World Athletics Championships have never previously been held on the African continent.

Nairobi has already hosted major international athletics competitions, including the World Athletics Under-18 Championships in 2017 and the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in 2021.

A historic moment for Africa

The 2029 championships will bring the world's leading track and field athletes to Kenya for an event that has been held outside Africa since its inaugural edition in 1983.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe welcomed Nairobi’s selection, pointing to Kenya’s strong athletics tradition and the significance of taking the championships to a new continent.

The successful Nairobi bid came against competition from cities with considerable experience in hosting major international sporting events. Its selection therefore represents a major achievement for Kenya’s athletics administration and its bid team.

Kasarani set for the spotlight

The championships are scheduled to take place at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, which is undergoing renovation.

The stadium is also part of Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, adding another major international sporting event to the venue’s calendar.

For Kenyan athletes, the 2029 championships will provide the opportunity to compete at a home World Championships. For fans, it will bring one of athletics’ biggest stages to Nairobi.

Munich awarded 2031 edition

World Athletics also announced that Munich, Germany, will host the 2031 World Athletics Championships.

The sequence means Beijing will host the 2027 championships, Nairobi will stage the event in 2029, and Munich will follow in 2031.

For Kenya, the immediate significance is clear: in 2029, Nairobi will become the first African city to host the World Athletics Championships.

It will be a historic occasion for the continent and another major chapter in Kenya’s long relationship with athletics.

Kenya’s AFCON 2027 Hosting Plans Face Fresh Test as CAF Raises Concerns

Kenya’s plans to host matches at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations have come under renewed pressure after the latest Confederation of African Football (CAF) inspection revealed that several key preparations have not progressed as expected.

Kenya is set to co-host the tournament with Uganda and Tanzania, with the three East African countries scheduled to stage the competition from June 19 to July 17, 2027. CAF has set January 2027 as the deadline for venues to be fully operational.

The latest CAF inspection took place in Kenya between August 26 and 28, with officials assessing stadiums, training grounds and other facilities linked to the tournament.

The inspection has highlighted a significant gap between the work expected by CAF and what has actually been completed.

According to the Nation report, the CAF delegation found that only about 10 percent of the work requested at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani had been completed since its previous inspection in February. The slow pace of renovation at Kasarani was identified as one of the biggest concerns.

The situation at some proposed training facilities was also worrying. CAF officials reportedly did not visit several of the sites after learning that little or no progress had been made since the previous inspection.

Among the facilities mentioned are Nyayo National Stadium, the Kenya Academy of Sports training grounds, Kenya Utalii Sports Ground and Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu.

Talanta Sports City, however, presented a different picture.

The new stadium, officially known as Raila Odinga International Stadium, received a much more positive assessment from the CAF delegation. The facility reportedly scored 80 percent during the inspection, although CAF still made recommendations for improvements before it can fully meet tournament requirements.

The contrast between Talanta and Kasarani has put Kenya's preparations under a sharper spotlight. Earlier CAF assessments had already identified gaps in the country's proposed AFCON venues, with the three main Nairobi stadiums requiring further work to comply with Category 4 standards.

Kenyan officials have continued to maintain that preparations are progressing. In June, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the government was focused on completing the infrastructure required for the tournament and that consultations and follow-up inspections with CAF were continuing.

The latest inspection now leaves Kenya with only a few months before CAF's January 2027 deadline.

With the tournament less than a year away, the country must complete the remaining stadium upgrades, improve training facilities and ensure that supporting infrastructure is ready for the continental competition.

CAF is expected to issue its assessment following the inspection, making the next decision an important one for Kenya's AFCON 2027 hosting plans.

Elena Rybakina Opens US Open Campaign With Convincing Win as World No. 1 Race Heats Up

Elena Rybakina has made a strong start to her US Open campaign, defeating 17-year-old wildcard Thea Frodin 6-3, 6-2 as the battle for the women’s world number one ranking becomes increasingly intriguing.

The second seed arrived at Flushing Meadows with some uncertainty surrounding her fitness after retiring from her Cincinnati quarter-final against Iga Swiatek because of a heel problem.

But there were few signs of discomfort during her opening match in New York.

Rybakina controlled the contest from the baseline and produced a particularly impressive display on serve, eventually completing the victory in straight sets.

The result also keeps her firmly in contention to take the number one ranking from Aryna Sabalenka.

The Kazakh currently sits just 434 points behind Sabalenka. She will move to the top of the rankings for the first time if she reaches the semi-finals in New York, even if Sabalenka successfully defends her US Open title.

There is another route to the summit for Rybakina. She will also become world number one if none of Sabalenka, Coco Gauff or Jessica Pegula goes on to win the tournament.

For a player who has already won two Grand Slam titles, including the Australian Open earlier this year, the prospect of finally reaching the top ranking provides an additional incentive.

"I'm definitely motivated," Rybakina said after the match, while acknowledging that there is still plenty of work ahead.

The 27-year-old has previously had opportunities to become number one but has been unable to complete the climb.

She is now taking a more measured approach, concentrating on recovering between matches rather than getting carried away by the rankings possibilities.

Her first-round performance suggested she has little reason to panic about the heel injury for now.

Rybakina dropped only three points on serve during the opening set and put together three consecutive love holds. Frodin struggled to create opportunities against one of the most powerful servers on the women's tour.

The teenager eventually earned her first break-point chances in the sixth game of the second set, but Rybakina saved both.

At the other end, Rybakina was ruthless whenever opportunities appeared. She converted her first three break points and quickly established a commanding 5-1 advantage.

Frodin refused to disappear quietly, however.

The American wildcard saved three match points with aces during her final service game and produced 11 aces in total. Her appearance was particularly notable because it was her WTA Tour main-draw debut, earned after winning the USTA Girls' 18s National Championship.

Rybakina finally closed out the match with an ace of her own.

It was her sixth of the contest and her 363rd ace of the season, keeping her at the top of the tour's ace standings.

Despite the one-sided scoreline, Rybakina had plenty of praise for her young opponent.

"She played really well today," she said, pointing to Frodin's serve and powerful groundstrokes.

For Rybakina, the immediate priority is recovery. Her recent injury means she is unwilling to look too far ahead, despite the enormous prize that could await her at the end of the tournament.

She will have a day away from competition before returning to the court, with the number one ranking increasingly within reach.

For now, the message from Rybakina is simple: one match, one recovery session and one step at a time.

Chelsea Land £47.1m Lamine Camara Deal as Enzo Fernandez Heads to Man City

Chelsea have moved quickly to reshape their midfield, agreeing a £47.1 million deal to sign Monaco star Lamine Camara as Enzo Fernandez prepares to leave Stamford Bridge for Manchester City.

The 22-year-old Senegalese midfielder has already completed his medical, putting him close to becoming the latest addition to Xabi Alonso's Chelsea squad.

Camara's arrival comes at a particularly interesting moment for the Blues. The club had been reluctant to meet Monaco's original asking price and had already seen two bids rejected.

That stance changed as Chelsea's transfer plans became more complicated, particularly with uncertainty surrounding Folarin Balogun's proposed move from Monaco to Everton.

Rather than enter the final stages of the window without replacing some of the midfield depth lost through Fernandez's departure, Chelsea decided to take another look at one of their long-term targets.

Camara is not a direct Fernandez replacement

Chelsea do not see Camara as a player who simply steps into Fernandez's position and performs the same job.

The two midfielders have different styles, meaning Alonso will have another option rather than a straight replacement for the Argentine.

Chelsea had also explored other possibilities, including Roma midfielder Manu Kone and another Premier League target, before settling on Camara.

The move fits into the club's wider attempt to ensure Alonso has enough quality across his squad to compete on several fronts.

Chelsea's huge summer continues

The Camara deal is another major piece of an extraordinary transfer window for Chelsea.

The London club have already spent heavily on strengthening the squad, including a club-record £117 million deal for Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.

They have also brought in Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Further attacking reinforcements include Emmanuel Emegha, Danny Welbeck and Geovany Quenda, while Jordan Henderson and Valentin Barco have added experience and versatility in midfield.

Full-backs Marco Palestra and Pep Chavarria have also joined the growing group of new arrivals.

The scale of Chelsea's recruitment becomes even more striking when considered alongside Fernandez's impending departure.

The Argentine is set to join Manchester City in a deal worth £125 million, matching the British transfer record.

That sale could have left Chelsea facing questions about whether they were weakening the squad by allowing one of their most important midfielders to leave.

Instead, the club have responded by bringing in another highly rated young midfielder.

Alonso starts with a perfect record

The timing will also please Alonso.

Chelsea have made a perfect start to the new season, winning all three of their competitive matches.

They defeated Fulham and Brighton in the Premier League before beating Luton Town in the Carabao Cup to reach the third round.

Camara will now join a squad that is already performing well but has ambitions of challenging on multiple fronts.

For Chelsea, the £47.1 million move is therefore about more than replacing a departing midfielder.

It is another statement that the club intends to give Alonso a deep and competitive squad — even if that means allowing a British-record transfer out of Stamford Bridge while immediately reinvesting in the team.

With the transfer window approaching its conclusion, Chelsea's midfield has gained another intriguing option, and Camara now has the chance to prove why the Blues were willing to return for him after Monaco rejected their earlier approaches.

Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper Pleads Not Guilty as Trial Is Set for November

Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper has pleaded not guilty to five charges stemming from incidents involving his former girlfriend in June.

Cooper appeared in a Douglas County courtroom on Monday, where he entered not-guilty pleas to the charges. His jury trial has now been scheduled for November 10, 12 and 13, according to 9NEWS and other reports.

The case includes a felony charge of second-degree assault by strangulation, along with misdemeanor charges connected to the June incidents, including an alleged violation of a protection order. Cooper was arrested twice in June following separate incidents involving his former girlfriend.

The latest court development comes just one day after the NFL placed Cooper on the Commissioner’s Exempt List. The designation means he cannot practice or play for Denver while on the list, although he continues to receive his salary and can remain around the team's facilities under the conditions of the designation.

Cooper had been able to participate in the Broncos' training camp and preseason despite the ongoing legal case. He even played in Denver's preseason finale against the Minnesota Vikings on August 28.

The timing of the trial is also notable for the Broncos. Denver is scheduled to play Carolina on November 8 before entering its bye week, with the trial beginning two days later. The Broncos are then scheduled to return to action against the Las Vegas Raiders on November 22.

Cooper has been an important part of Denver's defence since joining the team as a seventh-round pick from Ohio State in 2021. He recorded a career-best 10.5 sacks in 2024 and signed a four-year, $60 million contract extension that same year.

For now, however, his future on the field is uncertain.

The legal proceedings will continue into November, while the Broncos must prepare for the season without knowing exactly when Cooper might be available to return.

Cooper maintains his not-guilty position, and the charges remain allegations unless proven otherwise in court.

Saka Strikes as Arsenal Beat Aston Villa to Make It Two Wins From Two

Arsenal have continued their perfect start to the Premier League season after beating Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park, with Bukayo Saka scoring the only goal of the night.

After a cagey first half, Arsenal finally found the breakthrough in the 59th minute. Riccardo Calafiori delivered a low ball into the area and Saka was perfectly positioned to finish and send the visitors in front.

Arsenal's defence then did the rest.

Villa tried to find a response, but their attacking play lacked the quality needed in the final third. The home side failed to register a shot on target, while Arsenal remained composed as they protected their lead.

Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki also deserves credit for keeping the scoreline respectable, making several saves to prevent Arsenal from extending their advantage.

For Mikel Arteta, it was another controlled performance from a side that looks increasingly comfortable grinding out results. Arsenal did not need to dominate the scoreline; they waited for their opportunity and made it count.

Saka once again proved to be the difference.

Bukayo Saka Strikes as Arsenal Take the Lead at Villa Park

Arsenal have finally found the breakthrough at Villa Park, with Bukayo Saka putting the Gunners 1-0 ahead in the 59th minute.

The goal came after a patient Arsenal move. Gabriel found Eberechi Eze on the left, with Eze then releasing Riccardo Calafiori down the channel. The Italian defender drove a low ball across the face of goal, and Saka was perfectly positioned to meet it from close range.

It was a much-needed goal for Arsenal after a largely cagey first half. The visitors had controlled possession for spells but had struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.

Just minutes before the goal, Arsenal had a penalty appeal overturned by VAR after Ian Maatsen was judged to have fouled Saka just outside the box. The winger then had the final say by finding the net shortly afterwards.

Villa now have to respond, while Arsenal will be looking to protect their advantage and take control of the closing stages.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal: A Match With Early-Season Pressure

Arsenal arrived at Villa Park with a chance to build on their opening-day 3–0 win, while Aston Villa were looking to recover from a heavy 4–0 defeat to Brighton. The two sides entered the match at opposite ends of the early Premier League table.

Arsenal's unchanged starting XI shows Mikel Arteta is trusting the team that delivered against Coventry. Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice and Kai Havertz remain central to Arsenal's approach, while Villa have handed starts to new arrivals including goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and striker Nicolas Jackson.

The early battle is likely to come down to Arsenal's control against Villa's ability to break quickly. Unai Emery knows Arsenal well, but Villa have to improve considerably from the defensive performance that saw them concede four goals last weekend.

Bruno Fernandes Turns on the Magic as Manchester United Crush Ipswich 5-2

Manchester United needed a response, and their captain delivered one in spectacular fashion.

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as United came from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford, producing an attacking display that will give the club plenty to smile about.

Ipswich did not make life easy for the hosts. They took the lead through Leif Davis in the first half and looked capable of causing United serious problems. But Fernandes had other ideas.

Fernandes brings United level

With United searching for a way back into the game, Fernandes stepped up before half-time.

The Portuguese midfielder found the equaliser, giving United the platform they needed to completely change the direction of the match.

The goal was important for more than just the scoreline. It settled the home side and gave United renewed belief going into the second half.

From there, the game began to swing heavily in Manchester United's favour.

The captain takes control

Fernandes then put United ahead from the penalty spot.

There was pressure on the midfielder, particularly after he had missed his previous two penalties, but this time he stayed composed and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

It was the kind of moment that showed the confidence and responsibility Fernandes carries as United captain.

Only a few minutes later, he completed his hat-trick.

A loose ball fell his way inside the box after an attacking move involving United's forwards, and Fernandes reacted quickly to finish from close range.

Three goals. One captain. And suddenly Manchester United were in complete control.

United turn the game into a rout

Fernandes' third goal made it 4-1, and United continued to create chances as Ipswich struggled to contain the home side.

The visitors had competed well for much of the afternoon, but once United found their rhythm, the difference in attacking quality became increasingly obvious.

Bryan Mbeumo also got on the scoresheet, while a deflected effort involving Harry Maguire resulted in another United goal.

Ipswich managed a late consolation through Chuba Akpom, but the damage had already been done.

The final score: Manchester United 5-2 Ipswich Town.

United finished with 31 shots compared with Ipswich's nine, underlining just how much pressure they eventually put on the visitors.

A special night for Fernandes

For Fernandes, this was about more than simply adding three goals to his statistics.

The 31-year-old has established himself as one of Manchester United's most important players, and his influence has grown even further after being named the PFA Players' Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season.

His hat-trick against Ipswich showed another side of his game.

He was not simply creating opportunities for others. He was finishing them himself.

And when United needed someone to take responsibility, their captain repeatedly stepped forward.

A much-needed statement from Manchester United

The 5-2 victory also gives United something they have desperately needed: momentum.

After suffering a shock defeat to Hull City last week, the pressure was on Michael Carrick's side to respond. They did so with an emphatic attacking performance.

There were still defensive concerns, particularly with Ipswich finding the net twice, but United's response after going behind was encouraging.

The team showed energy, created chances and, most importantly, had a player willing to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

That player was Bruno Fernandes.

For Manchester United supporters, the hope will be that this performance is not simply an isolated afternoon of brilliance.

If Fernandes can continue producing performances like this, United could have a very different-looking season ahead.

For now, though, the headlines belong to the captain.

Bruno Fernandes. Three goals. One hat-trick. One unforgettable afternoon at Old Trafford.

Chelsea Complete Emiliano Martínez Signing as World Cup Winner Arrives From Aston Villa

Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa on a three-year contract, the club confirmed on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

Chelsea have completed the signing of Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa, bringing the 33-year-old Argentina international to Stamford Bridge on a three-year deal.

The transfer was confirmed by both Chelsea and Reuters on Sunday. Financial details were not officially disclosed by the clubs, although British media reports put the fee at around £7.5 million.

Martínez joins Chelsea after six seasons at Aston Villa, where he made 256 appearances and established himself as Argentina's first-choice goalkeeper.

World Cup Winner Joins Chelsea

Martínez arrives at Chelsea with an extensive international résumé.

He was part of Argentina's squad that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and has also won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024.

He has earned 67 caps for Argentina and has remained the country's first-choice goalkeeper during his international career.

Martínez also won the Yashin Trophy at the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d'Or ceremonies.

The goalkeeper began his professional career in Argentina with Independiente before moving to Arsenal in 2010.

After a series of loan spells, he became Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper towards the end of the 2019/20 season and helped the club win the FA Cup.

He subsequently moved to Aston Villa in September 2020.

Six Years at Aston Villa

Martínez spent six seasons at Villa Park.

During that period, he made 256 appearances for the club and became an established Premier League goalkeeper.

His time at Villa also included European success, with the club winning the Europa League in May 2026.

His departure follows Aston Villa's signing of Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma, which added another option to the club's goalkeeping department.

Martínez Makes Chelsea Debut Immediately

The transfer was completed in time for Martínez to go straight into Chelsea's starting XI against Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Chelsea confirmed his inclusion in the lineup shortly after announcing his signing.

The Argentine goalkeeper therefore made his Chelsea debut on the same day his transfer was officially announced.

His arrival gives manager Xabi Alonso another experienced option in goal.

Competition for the Goalkeeper Position

Martínez joins a Chelsea goalkeeping group that includes Robert Sánchez.

Reuters reported that Martínez will compete with Sánchez for the starting position following scrutiny of the Spaniard's recent performances.

Chelsea have therefore added an experienced international goalkeeper to their squad as the new Premier League campaign gets underway.

Martínez's First Words as a Chelsea Player

After completing the move, Martínez said joining Chelsea was an easy decision for him and his family.

He also spoke about his desire to win trophies with the club and bring his competitive mentality to Stamford Bridge.

“I’m all passion and I play with my heart,” Martínez said in his first Chelsea interview.

He added that he intends to give maximum effort in matches and training.

A New Chapter in England

Martínez has spent almost 17 years playing football in England after moving from Argentina as a teenager.

His career in England has included spells with Arsenal and Aston Villa, along with several loan moves early in his career.

He now begins another chapter with Chelsea.

The move also reunites Martínez with the Premier League at a club competing across domestic and European competitions.

Chelsea Survive Brighton Fightback in Seven-Goal Stamford Bridge Thriller

Chelsea maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a 4–3 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, August 30, 2026.

The Blues raced into a three-goal lead before Brighton mounted a second-half comeback that turned the match into a tense finish.

Roméo Lavia, Pedro Neto, João Pedro and Cole Palmer scored for Chelsea, while Brighton's goals came from Malick Yalcouyé, an own goal from João Pedro and Pascal Groß.

The result gives Chelsea six points from their opening two Premier League matches.

Chelsea Make Explosive Start

Chelsea needed only four minutes to open the scoring.

Roméo Lavia reacted quickest following a corner to put the ball into the Brighton net and register his first goal for Chelsea.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 14th minute.

Pedro Neto finished from inside the penalty area after Chelsea worked the ball into a dangerous position, giving the Blues a 2–0 lead.

Chelsea then made it three in the 32nd minute.

João Pedro found the net against his former club, completing a fast Chelsea attack and putting the home side in a commanding position.

Brighton Respond Before Half-Time

Brighton managed to reduce the deficit before the interval.

Malick Yalcouyé scored to make it 3–1, giving the visitors a goal before the break and keeping them within reach of Chelsea.

Chelsea went into half-time with the two-goal advantage.

Brighton Pull Chelsea Back Into the Contest

The visitors continued their comeback after the restart.

João Pedro was unfortunate to turn the ball into his own net, reducing Chelsea's advantage to 3–2.

The own goal gave Brighton renewed momentum as they looked for an equaliser.

Chelsea were eventually able to restore their two-goal cushion.

Palmer Delivers Chelsea's Fourth

With 16 minutes remaining, Cole Palmer produced an important moment for Chelsea.

The England international struck from outside the penalty area to make it 4–2, giving the hosts breathing room once again.

The goal proved decisive as Brighton continued to search for another response.

Brighton Score Again Late

Brighton refused to give up.

Pascal Groß scored late in the match to make the score 4–3.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser during the closing stages, but Chelsea held on to secure all three points.

The final whistle confirmed a seven-goal contest at Stamford Bridge.

João Pedro Involved at Both Ends

João Pedro had one of the most eventful afternoons of the match.

The Chelsea forward scored his team's third goal before later being credited with an own goal that helped Brighton reduce the deficit.

His goal was particularly notable because it came against his former club.

The Brazilian was one of several Chelsea attackers who contributed to a match in which the home side scored four times.

Martínez Makes Chelsea Debut

Emiliano Martínez made his Chelsea debut in the match after completing his move from Aston Villa.

The Argentine goalkeeper started between the posts for Xabi Alonso's side.

Martínez conceded three goals but finished the afternoon with a victory as Chelsea collected their second league win of the campaign.

Caicedo Suffers Injury Concern

Chelsea's victory was accompanied by an injury concern involving Moisés Caicedo.

The midfielder came on in the 68th minute but was forced to leave the field approximately 10 minutes later.

Caicedo appeared emotional as he left the pitch, with further assessment expected to determine the extent of the injury.

Chelsea's Premier League Record

The victory leaves Chelsea with a perfect record after two league matches.

Chelsea now have two wins from two Premier League matches under manager Xabi Alonso.

The victory also extended their strong start to the new campaign, although the seven-goal contest provided a dramatic finish after Chelsea had established a three-goal advantage.

The Blues will now turn their attention to their next fixture as they continue their 2026/27 Premier League campaign.

Manchester City Make Their Move for Cody Gakpo as Liverpool Face Late Transfer Dilemma

Manchester City have opened talks with Liverpool over Cody Gakpo, turning the Dutch forward’s future into one of the biggest stories of the final days of the transfer window.

A transfer that appeared increasingly unlikely only days ago has suddenly become a serious possibility.

Manchester City have made contact with Liverpool over a potential deal for Gakpo, according to Sky Sports, with discussions also taking place over personal terms for the Netherlands international. One source told Sky Sports that the move is increasingly developing in City's direction, although the transfer has not yet been completed.

The timing leaves Liverpool with an important decision.

The club is already on the verge of completing the signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, in a deal reported at £106 million initially and potentially rising to £123 million. Liverpool have also brought in Victor Muñoz from Osasuna this summer.

That strengthening of the forward line has changed the context surrounding Gakpo's situation.

But Liverpool must still decide whether allowing an established international forward to leave so late in the window represents a sensible move.

City Suddenly Need a Winger

Manchester City's interest has emerged partly because of their own changing attacking options.

City have allowed Savio and Omar Marmoush to join Tottenham, reducing their available wide options.

The situation was particularly noticeable in City's recent Premier League match against Crystal Palace, when they did not name a recognised winger among their substitutes and used Phil Foden in a wide position despite manager Enzo Maresca acknowledging that Foden is not naturally a winger.

Jack Grealish is also attracting interest from Everton and Sunderland and was absent from the squad against Palace.

The result is a Manchester City attack that suddenly has less depth on the flanks than it had earlier in the summer.

Gakpo therefore represents an attractive solution.

He is capable of playing from the left, operating centrally and contributing goals, giving City the kind of versatility that becomes particularly valuable during a long season.

From Interest to Actual Negotiations

The latest development is significant because City's pursuit has moved beyond simple scouting or reported interest.

Earlier in August, Sky Sports reported that City were interested in Gakpo but had not yet held club-to-club talks with Liverpool. At that point, Gakpo remained under contract at Anfield until 2030.

Now, those discussions have begun.

That does not mean an agreement has been reached.

It does, however, demonstrate that City have decided the 27-year-old is a realistic target as the transfer deadline approaches.

Personal terms are also being discussed, according to Sky Sports, adding another indication that negotiations have progressed beyond an initial enquiry.

Liverpool's Complicated Position

For Liverpool, the timing could hardly be more important.

The club has already invested heavily in its attack and has reportedly agreed a major deal for Barcola.

Liverpool also started the Premier League season with Cody Gakpo still involved, including scoring in the opening-day draw at Newcastle.

Gakpo has therefore not been pushed completely out of the picture.

The question is whether the arrival of Barcola changes the club's calculations enough to make a late sale acceptable.

There is also the issue of replacing him.

Even if Liverpool decide that a transfer is financially attractive, selling an established attacker with only days remaining in the window could leave the squad short if another replacement cannot be secured.

Liverpool's recruitment team therefore has to balance two competing priorities: taking advantage of a potentially significant offer while ensuring the squad remains strong enough for the season ahead.

Why Gakpo Appeals to Manchester City

Gakpo's attraction is not difficult to understand.

The Dutch international has the physical profile and technical quality required for Premier League football, while his ability to operate in several attacking positions makes him particularly useful to a manager managing a demanding schedule.

He can provide width, attack the penalty area and contribute directly to goals.

For City, versatility may be just as important as reputation.

Their recent squad changes have left them needing additional options in wide areas, and Gakpo could provide immediate competition and depth.

The fact that he is already accustomed to English football would also remove much of the adaptation period associated with signing a player arriving from another league.

Tottenham Still Have a Role in the Story

Manchester City are not the only club to have shown interest.

Tottenham had targeted Gakpo during the transfer window before completing deals for Savio and Marmoush.

That interest helped establish Gakpo as one of the prominent forwards potentially available late in the window.

But Tottenham's recruitment has now taken them in another direction.

That leaves City in a stronger position to pursue the Liverpool forward.

The situation could therefore become one of the window's most intriguing late moves: a player wanted by Tottenham potentially ending up at one of their Premier League rivals instead.

Barcola Changes the Equation

Liverpool's impending arrival of Barcola is arguably the most important piece of the puzzle.

Reuters reported that Liverpool had finalized an agreement to sign the French winger from PSG for a package potentially worth £123 million, with £106 million guaranteed and additional performance-related payments.

That gives Liverpool another high-level attacking option.

It also provides context for why Gakpo's future is now being questioned.

However, Barcola's arrival does not automatically mean Gakpo must leave.

Liverpool still have a long season ahead and multiple competitions to contest.

Selling too much attacking depth could create a problem of its own, particularly if injuries affect the squad.

The club therefore has to determine whether the financial and sporting benefits of a Gakpo sale outweigh the risks of losing an experienced forward.

No Deal Yet

For all the excitement surrounding the story, one point remains crucial:

Cody Gakpo is still a Liverpool player.

Manchester City have opened talks.

Personal terms are being discussed.

The move is reportedly advancing in City's direction.

But there is no completed transfer at this stage.

That distinction matters, particularly with only days remaining before the transfer window closes.

A deal still requires agreement between the clubs and the necessary contractual and formal processes.

Until those are completed, Gakpo remains at Anfield.

A Transfer Story Entering Its Decisive Stage

What seemed like a straightforward question about Liverpool's attacking depth has suddenly become a much bigger transfer story.

Manchester City need wide attacking options.

Liverpool are bringing in Barcola.

Tottenham have already moved on to other targets.

And Gakpo's future has become one of the major unresolved questions of the closing days of the window.

The next few days will determine whether City can turn their interest into an agreement or whether Liverpool decide that Gakpo remains too valuable to lose.

For now, the facts are clear.

Manchester City have made their move. Liverpool have to decide whether to open the door.

Hovland Holds His Nerve as Scheffler and McIlroy Keep FedExCup Dream Alive

Viktor Hovland will take a slender lead into the final round of the Tour Championship, but Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy remain firmly in the hunt for the biggest prize of the PGA Tour season.

The FedExCup finale has delivered exactly the kind of drama expected from a season-ending championship, with Viktor Hovland moving into the outright lead while two of the biggest names in golf remain within striking distance.

Hovland produced a composed five-under 65 at East Lake Golf Club on Saturday, finishing with consecutive birdies to reach 15 under par after three rounds.

That put the Norwegian one stroke ahead of American Ryan Gerard, who carded a 66 to move to 14 under.

Behind them sits a crowded group of contenders, ensuring that the FedExCup will not be decided until the final round.

Hovland Finds His Best Form at the Right Time

Hovland's position is particularly significant because he already knows what it takes to win the FedExCup.

The Norwegian captured the title in 2023, and another victory at East Lake would give him a second championship in just four years.

His third-round 65 was built around a strong finish.

After pulling level with Gerard on 13 under, Hovland birdied the 17th to move into the outright lead before both players birdied the par-five 18th.

It was the kind of finish that could prove decisive when the final round begins.

Hovland said afterwards that he was particularly pleased with the way he finished, having found a level of consistency in his putting that had not always been present in recent weeks.

The 28-year-old now has the advantage of playing in the final group alongside Gerard.

Gerard Refuses to Let Hovland Get Away

Ryan Gerard may not have the same résumé as Hovland, Scheffler or McIlroy, but he has put himself in a position to compete for the biggest title of his career.

Gerard reached 14 under after a third-round 66 and will begin Sunday just one shot behind Hovland.

His performance has been one of the major stories of the tournament.

Gerard has previously won once on the PGA Tour, at last year's Barracuda Championship, but a victory at East Lake would represent a vastly bigger achievement.

For three rounds, he has shown that he is capable of staying alongside the game's biggest names.

Now comes the hardest part.

Scheffler Still Has Everything to Play For

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler enters the final round three shots behind Hovland at 12 under.

That is close enough to keep his FedExCup hopes very much alive.

Scheffler carded a third-round 65 and shares third place with Adam Scott and Ludvig Åberg.

The position also reflects the quality of the field chasing the leaders.

Scheffler arrived at East Lake as one of the overwhelming favourites and has another opportunity to claim the FedExCup after previously winning it in 2022 and 2024.

The tournament's format means the final round carries enormous weight: the player who finishes with the lowest four-round score will take the title and the $10 million first prize.

Scheffler therefore does not need a miracle.

He simply needs one outstanding final round.

McIlroy Produces the Round Everyone Was Waiting For

If Hovland provided the headline, Rory McIlroy supplied the most dramatic comeback.

McIlroy fired a nine-under 63, matching his lowest career round at East Lake and launching himself back into contention.

The Northern Irishman began the day seven shots off the halfway lead.

By the end of the round, he had reduced the deficit to five.

McIlroy made nine birdies during his round, including a particularly impressive run over the closing holes.

He also gained significantly on the greens after struggling with his putting during the opening two rounds.

McIlroy now sits at 10 under par, tied for seventh alongside Cameron Young.

That still leaves him five shots behind Hovland, but his third-round performance has changed the complexion of his weekend.

A player who looked in danger of drifting out of the tournament suddenly has a realistic opportunity to make a final-day charge.

The FedExCup Battle Is Wide Open

The leaderboard heading into Sunday tells the story.

Viktor Hovland — 15 under

Ryan Gerard — 14 under

Scottie Scheffler — 12 under

Adam Scott — 12 under

Ludvig Åberg — 12 under

Rory McIlroy — 10 under

Cameron Young — 10 under

With only five shots separating Hovland from McIlroy, the final round remains open.

And the pressure is not limited to the players chasing the title.

Every shot matters because the Tour Championship is the final stage of the FedExCup Playoffs, with the season-long championship and its $10 million winner's prize at stake.

Hovland Has the Advantage — But Not the Comfort

Being the leader heading into the final round is valuable, but East Lake has already demonstrated how quickly the leaderboard can change.

Cameron Young produced a remarkable 62 earlier in the tournament.

McIlroy followed with a 63.

Hovland himself shot 65.

The scoring has therefore been low enough for players several shots behind to make significant moves in a single round.

That makes Sunday particularly difficult to predict.

Hovland has the lead, but Gerard is immediately behind him.

Scheffler has the advantage of experience.

McIlroy has momentum.

And players such as Scott and Åberg remain close enough to make a serious challenge.

One Final Round to Decide It All

The Tour Championship has reached its decisive moment.

Hovland will walk onto the first tee knowing that 18 more holes separate him from another FedExCup title.

Gerard will attempt to turn an impressive week into the biggest victory of his career.

Scheffler will chase another season-ending championship.

And McIlroy, after producing one of the best rounds of the tournament, will try to complete the comeback.

There is no guarantee that the player leading after three rounds will still be leading by the time the final putt drops.

For now, Hovland has the advantage.

But with Scheffler only three shots away and McIlroy five behind, the FedExCup remains very much up for grabs.

One final Sunday at East Lake will decide who walks away as the 2026 FedExCup champion.

Tottenham’s £320m Gamble Faces Its First Big Test as De Zerbi Admits the Real Problem

Roberto De Zerbi has identified mentality as Tottenham Hotspur’s biggest challenge after another defeat left the heavily rebuilt side without a Premier League goal after two matches.

Tottenham Hotspur’s expensive summer rebuild has already encountered an uncomfortable reality: new players can change a squad, but they cannot instantly change a team’s habits.

That was the message from Roberto De Zerbi after Tottenham suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday, leaving Spurs bottom of the Premier League after losing their opening two matches without scoring.

The defeat came despite a first half in which Tottenham showed encouraging signs and created opportunities. Newcastle, however, became increasingly effective after the interval and eventually took control of the match through Anthony Elanga, before Yoane Wissa doubled the advantage.

For De Zerbi, the result exposed an issue that money alone cannot solve.

When asked whether mentality was the biggest problem facing him, the Tottenham manager gave a direct answer.

"Yes, you are right, for sure."

De Zerbi: Mentality Cannot Be Bought

Tottenham have invested heavily in their squad during the summer transfer window, spending around £320 million according to Sky Sports.

The club's recruitment has brought in a significant number of new players as De Zerbi attempts to reshape a side that finished 17th in each of the previous two Premier League seasons.

But the manager acknowledged that assembling a talented squad is only part of the process.

De Zerbi explained that mentality cannot simply be purchased in the transfer market and that bringing several new players together does not automatically create the balance required for a successful team.

His concern became particularly apparent after Newcastle scored.

Tottenham had competed well for long periods, but once they fell behind, they were unable to produce the response required to turn the game around.

That pattern is exactly what De Zerbi wants to eliminate.

Two Games, Two Defeats

The early Premier League statistics make uncomfortable reading for Spurs.

Tottenham opened their campaign with a 3-0 defeat away to Brentford and followed it with Saturday's 2-0 loss to Newcastle.

They have therefore conceded five goals without scoring once in their first two league matches.

The contrast is particularly striking because Tottenham had shown a different side of themselves in the Carabao Cup, where they recorded a 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic.

The problem, therefore, is not simply that the squad lacks attacking or technical ability.

The challenge is translating that quality into consistent Premier League performances.

De Zerbi himself acknowledged that Tottenham's new squad needs time to develop the necessary balance.

He also maintained that he believes the project can succeed.

Carragher: Spurs' Start Could Hardly Be Worse

Jamie Carragher was considerably less forgiving in his assessment.

Speaking for Sky Sports, the former Liverpool defender described Tottenham's beginning to the campaign as a start that "couldn't have gone any worse."

Carragher nevertheless believes there is a logical explanation for some of Tottenham's difficulties.

A large number of new players have arrived, meaning De Zerbi is still attempting to determine the best combinations and establish how the different pieces fit together.

Carragher specifically pointed to the quality Tottenham have added in midfield, including Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, while suggesting that the club's recruitment is probably not finished.

He expects Tottenham to return to the transfer market before the window closes.

That expectation is significant because Spurs' poor opening results could encourage the club to make further moves rather than wait for the existing squad to settle.

The Newcastle Defeat Was Not Completely One-Sided

The scoreline does not tell the entire story.

Tottenham were the better side for stretches of the first half and had opportunities before Newcastle eventually broke the deadlock.

But Newcastle were more clinical when the important moments arrived.

Elanga opened the scoring in the second half, and Wissa later produced the second goal to put the result beyond Tottenham's reach.

The second goal also attracted criticism from Carragher, who questioned Tottenham's defensive response as Newcastle capitalised.

For De Zerbi, however, the bigger concern appeared to be what happened psychologically after the first goal.

Tottenham had to respond.

They did not.

A Squad Still Learning How to Play Together

There is an important distinction between a bad team and a team that has not yet become a good team.

Tottenham's summer recruitment suggests the club believes it has addressed major weaknesses in the squad.

But recruitment does not instantly create chemistry.

New players must understand one another's movements, learn the manager's system and develop trust in difficult moments.

That process becomes considerably harder when results go against the team.

And Tottenham are already experiencing that pressure.

The club's previous two league campaigns ended with 17th-place finishes, meaning De Zerbi inherited a side carrying considerable frustration and expectation.

The manager now has to change that environment while simultaneously integrating a large number of new signings.

Reuters described the Newcastle defeat as evidence of the scale of the challenge facing De Zerbi, particularly after Spurs collapsed in the second half despite showing promise earlier in the match.

More Transfer Business Could Follow

Carragher believes Tottenham are likely to continue working in the transfer market.

That would make sense given the circumstances.

The club has already spent heavily, but the early results have exposed areas where further adjustment may be required.

At the same time, Tottenham are dealing with uncertainty over several existing players.

After the Newcastle match, De Zerbi confirmed that Richarlison, Kevin Danso and Pape Matar Sarr had expressed a desire to leave the club.

That adds another layer of complexity to an already busy transfer window.

Spurs are therefore not simply trying to add players.

They may also need to manage departures while maintaining enough stability for De Zerbi to build his team.

The Pressure Is Real, But the Season Is Young

Two Premier League matches are not enough to determine the fate of an entire season.

Tottenham have a new manager, a heavily remodelled squad and several players still adapting to English football and De Zerbi's methods.

There is therefore a legitimate argument for patience.

But patience becomes harder to maintain when a club has spent hundreds of millions of pounds and begins the season with consecutive defeats and no goals.

That is the tension Tottenham now face.

The squad may eventually become the team De Zerbi wants.

The question is how long that transformation will take.

For now, the manager has identified the problem himself.

It is not simply tactics.

It is not simply recruitment.

It is mentality.

And unlike another transfer, that is something Tottenham cannot solve by simply opening the cheque book.

The next phase of De Zerbi's project will therefore be less about how much Tottenham can spend and more about whether he can turn a collection of expensive new signings into a side capable of responding when the pressure arrives.

The money has already been spent. Now Tottenham need to show what it can actually produce.

England Smell Series Victory as Pakistan Collapse Under Lord’s Pressure

England moved within touching distance of a series victory over Pakistan on Sunday after Mohammad Abbas’ five-wicket haul could not prevent the hosts from setting a formidable fourth-innings target at Lord’s.

England resumed the fourth day on 177 for seven in their second innings, already holding a 357-run advantage after Pakistan had been bowled out for 110 in their first innings.

The remaining England batsmen added 31 more runs before Pakistan finally ended the innings. England were dismissed for 208 after 54.2 overs, leaving Pakistan with 389 runs to win the second Test and level the three-match series.

For Pakistan, Mohammad Abbas was the outstanding performer with the ball. He claimed five wickets in England's second innings, earning his place on the Lord's honours board with a performance that deserved recognition even as his team faced an enormous target.

Lawrence Falls After Another Valuable Innings

Dan Lawrence had given England an important platform on the previous day, reaching an unbeaten 50 before play was abandoned because of bad light.

He eventually fell for 54, bowled by Abbas as Pakistan continued to make England work for every run. Ollie Robinson then became Abbas' fifth victim, edging behind to Mohammad Rizwan for eight.

Josh Tongue added 12 before being run out, bringing England's second innings to an end.

Jofra Archer was left unbeaten on two.

England's 389-run target was therefore set without the need for a declaration.

Pakistan's Chase Starts in Nightmare Fashion

Pakistan needed an exceptional batting performance to stay alive in the series.

Instead, England's new-ball attack immediately exposed the difficulty of the chase.

Ollie Robinson struck first, trapping Azan Awais lbw for six. He then produced an excellent delivery to remove Abdullah Shafique for a duck, leaving Pakistan seven runs for two wickets.

Jofra Archer then delivered another major blow.

Babar Azam, returning to the Pakistan side after missing the opening Test with a finger injury, was dismissed for three when a short delivery from Archer was taken at slip. Pakistan were subsequently 22 for three after 10 overs, with Shan Masood and Saud Shakeel attempting to rebuild the innings.

The collapse meant Pakistan had lost three wickets while still needing 367 more runs for victory.

England's Bowlers Have Taken Control

England's dominance has been built around their pace attack.

Ollie Robinson was particularly impressive earlier in the match, taking four wickets for 11 runs when Pakistan were dismissed for 110 in the first innings.

Jofra Archer also played a major role, using his pace and short-pitched bowling to unsettle Pakistan's batsmen. He took three wickets for 26 runs in that innings.

The conditions at Lord's have also rewarded England's seamers, with movement and uneven bounce making life difficult for Pakistan's batting order.

That combination has left Pakistan facing a massive task in the fourth innings.

England Seeking a First Home Series Win in 20 Months

England entered the Lord's Test with a 1-0 lead after an emphatic innings-and-103-run victory at Headingley.

A victory at Lord's would therefore give Joe Root's side an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series.

England's position is especially striking given how quickly Pakistan's batting has struggled during the tour.

Pakistan were bowled out for 171 and 136 in the first Test before managing only 110 in their first innings at Lord's.

England have consequently been able to put Pakistan under scoreboard pressure in almost every innings.

Pakistan Still Have a Huge Fight Ahead

There is, however, still cricket to be played.

A target of 389 is difficult, but Pakistan's batsmen have an opportunity to change the story if they can establish a substantial partnership.

The biggest challenge is surviving England's pace attack.

With Robinson and Archer already responsible for the early damage, Pakistan's remaining batsmen face a long battle against an England attack that has consistently found ways to take wickets.

For England, the task is now straightforward: continue applying pressure and take the remaining seven wickets.

For Pakistan, the equation is considerably harder.

They need to produce a batting performance that has so far eluded them during this tour.

At Lord's, England are firmly in command.

But until the final wicket falls, the series is not officially won.

Tottenham Turn to Everton as Ndiaye and Richarlison Deals Edge Closer

Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are moving towards a dramatic exchange of attacking talent, with Iliman Ndiaye and Richarlison at the centre of separate transfer negotiations.

The final days of the transfer window are producing another unexpected Premier League storyline, with Tottenham Hotspur in advanced discussions with Everton over a move for Iliman Ndiaye, while Everton are simultaneously working on a deal to bring former favourite Richarlison back to Merseyside.

The two transfers are being negotiated separately, but their timing has created the possibility of a remarkable reshaping of both clubs' attacking options.

Tottenham have identified Ndiaye as a leading target as they look to strengthen their forward line. The Senegal international has emerged as one of Everton's most important attacking players since arriving from Marseille in 2024, making the potential departure a significant decision for David Moyes' side.

Sky Sports reports that Everton would require the right financial package before agreeing to sell Ndiaye. The player has also turned down several attempts from the club to extend his contract, adding another layer of uncertainty around his future.

Richarlison's Everton Return

At the other end of the negotiations, Everton are exploring a reunion with Richarlison.

The Brazilian became a major figure at Goodison Park after joining Everton from Watford in 2018. He eventually left for Tottenham in 2022 in a deal worth around £60 million, ending a successful spell in which he scored 53 goals in 152 appearances for the club.

His time in north London, however, has been considerably more difficult.

Richarlison has scored 32 goals in 134 appearances for Tottenham, but injuries, competition for places and inconsistent form have prevented him from establishing himself as the central attacking figure many expected after his expensive move.

The situation has now reached a decisive point.

Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi confirmed that Richarlison had asked to leave the club and was omitted from the squad for the recent home defeat to Newcastle. With the Brazilian entering the final year of his Tottenham contract, a return to Everton could offer both player and club a fresh start.

Why Tottenham Want Ndiaye

For Tottenham, Ndiaye represents a different type of attacking option.

The 26-year-old is capable of operating across the forward line and has developed into an influential player for Everton. His ability to carry the ball, create opportunities and attack defenders makes him an attractive option for a Tottenham side seeking more movement and creativity in the final third.

Spurs' pursuit of Ndiaye has also intensified as their other attacking targets become increasingly difficult to secure.

Tottenham had been interested in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, but Manchester City have now moved into a stronger position in negotiations for the Netherlands international. That development has encouraged Spurs to push harder for alternatives, with Ndiaye emerging as one of their preferred options.

Interestingly, Ndiaye has also attracted interest from Manchester City, meaning Tottenham are attempting to secure a player who has been on the radar of one of their biggest domestic rivals.

Two Deals, One Major Transfer Story

Although the Ndiaye and Richarlison negotiations are taking place at the same time, they are not formally one swap deal.

That distinction matters.

Tottenham would be buying Ndiaye from Everton, while Everton would separately negotiate Richarlison's return. Each transfer therefore has its own financial and contractual requirements.

Yet, if both agreements are completed, the consequences could be substantial.

Everton would lose one of their most exciting current attackers but regain a player who already understands the club and has a strong connection with its supporters.

Tottenham, meanwhile, would replace a forward who appears determined to leave with a younger attacking option who could provide greater flexibility across the frontline.

A Deadline-Day Story Waiting to Happen?

With the transfer window approaching its conclusion, there is little room for either club to waste time.

Everton must decide how much Ndiaye's departure would weaken their squad and whether Richarlison can provide enough attacking quality to compensate.

Tottenham face a similar calculation. They need reinforcements in attack, but any major late-window signing must fit into the club's wider plans under De Zerbi.

For supporters of both clubs, the next few days could therefore be decisive.

A player who once became an Everton hero could be heading back to Goodison Park, while one of the club's current stars could be preparing for a new chapter in north London.

The deals remain subject to final negotiations, personal terms and the necessary formalities, but the direction of travel is becoming increasingly clear: Richarlison could be returning to Everton, while Ndiaye could be on his way to Tottenham.

Iran Lodges FIFA Complaint Over World Cup Travel Restrictions

Iran's football federation has announced plans to file an official complaint with FIFA over travel restrictions imposed on the national team during the ongoing FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Under the conditions attached to the team's visas, Iran is only permitted to enter the United States one day before each match and must leave shortly after the game concludes. Iranian officials argue that the arrangement places the team at a competitive disadvantage compared to other participating nations.

The issue drew criticism from head coach Amir Ghalenoei, who described Iran as the "most oppressed" team at the tournament following their 2-2 draw against New Zealand in Los Angeles.

In a statement, the Football Federation of Iran (FFIRI) said the restrictions undermine equal treatment among competing teams and could affect player preparation and performance. The federation indicated that it would formally raise the matter with FIFA, urging football's governing body to uphold fairness and neutrality throughout the tournament.

Iran's World Cup campaign has faced additional challenges amid regional tensions and security concerns linked to the conflict in the Middle East. Several members of the team's support staff were reportedly unable to obtain entry visas to the United States, while the federation also expressed concerns over ticket allocation issues before the tournament began.

U.S. officials maintain that the travel conditions were known and accepted before the competition started. According to representatives of the U.S. administration, Iran's squad is allowed to enter the country on the day before a scheduled match and is expected to depart after the fixture has been completed.

Iran had initially planned to establish its World Cup training base in Arizona but later relocated to Tijuana, Mexico, citing circumstances related to the regional conflict.

The team is set to continue its Group Stage campaign with matches against Belgium in Los Angeles and Egypt in Seattle. Iranian officials say they requested permission to arrive two days before each fixture to allow players additional time for training, recovery, and adaptation to local conditions, but those requests were reportedly declined.

The federation argues that the restrictions have disrupted its preferred preparation schedule and is seeking FIFA's intervention as the tournament progresses.

Aston Villa Edge Bologna 1–0 in Europa League Clash

Aston Villa secured their first European win of the season with a narrow 1–0 victory over Bologna at Villa Park. John McGinn’s 13th-minute strike proved decisive, though the match was far from straightforward.

Villa had a chance to double their lead in the second half when Ollie Watkins won a penalty, but his spot kick was saved — continuing a frustrating run of missed opportunities for the striker. Bologna grew into the game, with Santiago Castro hitting the woodwork and Martin Vitik forcing a key save from goalkeeper Marco Bizot, but they failed to find an equaliser.

While the win lifts Villa’s spirits, questions remain about their attacking sharpness. Watkins, despite tireless work up front, has faced criticism for missed chances, though captain McGinn leapt to his defence, insisting his teammate has nothing left to prove. Morgan Rogers also endured a difficult evening, struggling to impact the game, though manager Unai Emery defended his decision to keep him on, stressing the importance of learning under pressure.

For Villa, the positives lie in the clean sheet, three points, and a much-needed confidence boost. Yet, if the team is to progress deep into the Europa League, greater consistency and clinical finishing will be essential.

Ferrari Boss Confident in Hamilton’s Recovery After Difficult Hungarian GP

During the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton failed to reach Q3 in qualifying and finished 12th in the race, marking his first non-scoring result at the Hungaroring since 2007. After the race, Hamilton expressed frustration, stating, "I feel completely useless" and "They probably need to change driver."

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur responded by defending Hamilton, describing him as frustrated but not lacking motivation. Vasseur said Hamilton pushes himself harder than anyone and added that the race was difficult due to the strategy choice. Starting on hard tyres, Hamilton was caught in a DRS train, which limited his progress. Vasseur noted that Hamilton's pace was strong when in clean air and said, “He will bounce back.”

Teammate Charles Leclerc, who took pole position and finished fourth in the same race, acknowledged Hamilton’s struggles but did not express concern. The team remains supportive as Formula 1 enters its summer break ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix at the end of August.

Spain Dominates: 6–2 Rout of Belgium Secures Quarter-Finals Spot

Spain stamped their authority on UEFA Women's Euro 2025 with a resounding 6–2 victory over Belgium in Group B, booked their place in the quarter-finals, and reinforced their status as tournament favourites.

Match Highlights

Alexia Putellas opened the scoring after 22 minutes with a composed finish. Belgium responded quickly through Justine Vanhaevermaet’s header, and then Hannah Eurlings made it 2–2 early in the second half.

Spain took full control after that. Irene Paredes, Esther González, Mariona Caldentey, and a spectacular long-range strike from Clàudia Pina followed—turning defense into relentless attack.

Putellas added a second goal and was named Player of the Match. She later described her performance as a “flow state,” crediting the team’s cohesion and mental focus.

Aitana Bonmatí, returning after a short illness, rejoined the midfield in the second half and added creativity and balance to Spain’s setup.

Impact on the Group

Spain now leads Group B with six points from two matches, following an earlier 5–0 win over Portugal. They are fully in control and mathematically through to the quarter-finals.

Belgium, having lost both their group matches, are now officially out of the tournament. Italy and Portugal will battle for the remaining spot in the group.

What It All Means

Spain’s dominance reflects not only their attacking strength but also their tactical flexibility. Head coach Montse Tomé praised the team’s ability to adapt and highlighted Putellas' leadership on and off the field.

Belgium, though spirited and briefly level at 2–2, struggled to withstand Spain’s high press and composure. The final score reflects the gulf in quality and depth between the two sides.

What’s Next?

Spain will face Italy in their final group-stage match. A win will secure the top spot in Group B and build more momentum heading into the knockout stages.

All signs suggest Spain is one of the favourites for the Euro 2025 title—and their performance against Belgium sends a clear warning to every team left in the competition.

PSG vs Bayern: Heavyweights Clash as Club World Cup Quarter-Finals Loom

At the FIFA Club World Cup in Atlanta, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich prepare for a high-stakes quarter-final showdown. PSG, fresh off a Champions League triumph captured in Munich last month, enters as favorites. They’ve secured commanding wins over Inter Miami (4–0) and Seattle Sounders (2–0), offset by a surprise loss to Botafogo. Bayern, under Vincent Kompany, were runners-up in their group but impressed with a 4–2 win over Flamengo—highlighted by a Harry Kane brace—and a dominant 10–0 routing of Auckland City(thesun.co.uk).

Both clubs are riding formidable momentum. Bayern, Bundesliga champions yet again, have netted 16 goals in four Club World Cup matches, showcasing their intent after a disappointing Champions League exit(citizen.digital). PSG, led by coach Luis Enrique, is on a mission to extend their historic continental success—they’re chasing a global title to crown an exceptional season(citizen.digital).

In a subplot rich in drama, PSG’s Bradley Barcola is seeking redemption after Bayern bested them in the Champions League group stage last autumn(bavarianfootballworks.com). Bayern’s own Harry Kane remains confident, affirming that “we can beat anyone when we’re at our level” as he prepares to face the European champions once more(bavarianfootballworks.com).

This match is shaping up as a heavyweight clash: PSG are seen as favorites, but Bayern’s firepower and recent performances signal they’re far from underdogs. The winner could well emerge as the tournament favorite, though Real Madrid still looms as a strong contender later in the draw().

Ben Shelton Fumes as Wimbledon Match Halted Just One Game from Victory

American tennis star Ben Shelton was left visibly furious after his second-round match at Wimbledon against Rinky Hijikata was suspended due to poor lighting—right as he was about to serve for the win.

Having dominated the match early on, Shelton took the first two sets convincingly, 6-2 and 7-5. He then surged ahead in the third, leading 5-4 and preparing to serve for the match. But as the sun dipped below the horizon and the clock neared 21:30, the umpire on Court Two made the contentious call to halt play for the day.

The decision sparked immediate frustration from the 22-year-old, who had hoped to close out the match within minutes. His protests to officials were animated, questioning why the suspension couldn’t have come earlier or why he now had to return on Friday to potentially play just one game. The interruption also robs him of what could have been a valuable full day of rest.

Shelton, a two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist and seeded 10th at this year's Wimbledon, had earlier asked for play to be paused before the third set began due to fading light—but that request had been denied. To make matters worse, he had just failed to convert three match points on Hijikata's serve moments before the suspension.

Now, instead of celebrating a straight-sets victory, Shelton must refocus and return to finish the job—hoping the overnight delay doesn't shift the momentum in Hijikata’s favor.

The football community is mourning the sudden and devastating loss of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva. The two were killed in a car crash early Thursday morning in northwestern Spain.

What Happened

According to Spanish police, the brothers were driving a Lamborghini along the A‑52 highway near the city of Zamora. Around midnight, during an overtaking maneuver, a tire burst. The car veered off the road, crashed, and erupted in flames. Both Jota and his brother died instantly.

About the Victims

Diogo Jota, aged 28, was one of Portugal’s brightest football stars. Having played a key role in Liverpool’s recent Premier League title, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances over five years. He also had 49 caps for Portugal’s national team, contributing 14 goals and helping the squad win the Nations League this summer.

His brother, André Silva, was a 25-year-old midfielder playing for Penafiel, a second-division club in Portugal. The two were reportedly returning from a private celebration when the tragedy occurred.

The Impact and Reactions

Jota’s sudden death sent shockwaves through the sports world. Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro expressed deep sorrow, calling the incident an “unexpected and tragic” loss. Tributes have poured in from across the globe, including messages from Cristiano Ronaldo, UEFA, Liverpool FC, and fellow players in both football and other sports.

Ronaldo wrote on social media, “This doesn’t make any sense. I’m heartbroken. Let’s support his family the way he always supported us.”

A Family Man

Jota had recently married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso in a private ceremony on June 22. The couple had three children together, the youngest born just last year. His death leaves behind a grieving family and millions of devastated fans.

Why It Matters

Diogo Jota wasn’t just a footballer—he was a global talent, a loving father, and a rising icon. His death is a loss to football, to Portugal, and to everyone who admired his passion and humility.

From Madrid to Miami? Karim Benzema Eyes MLS Move Amid Retirement Rumors

In a story that’s setting off fireworks in the football world, former Real Madrid icon Karim Benzema is reportedly plotting his next move — and it could take him to the heart of American soccer.

At 37, the Ballon d'Or-winning striker is considering a switch to Major League Soccer (MLS) as he looks to secure a U.S. visa, according to a report from the New York Post. Benzema has already enlisted top immigration attorney Michael Wildes, best known for helping global celebrities settle in the United States. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup looming on U.S. soil, the timing couldn’t be more intriguing.

Currently playing for Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League, where he's raking in over $110 million annually, Benzema has proven he still has fire in his boots. So far this season, he’s scored 19 goals and provided 9 assists in just 27 starts — a reminder that age is just a number when it comes to elite talent.

But why leave now?

While no MLS club has publicly entered the race, speculation is swirling. Benzema’s potential arrival would likely require a Designated Player (DP) slot — a mechanism MLS clubs use to sign top-tier stars outside standard salary cap constraints. Think of legends like Beckham, Zlatan, or Messi — Benzema would follow in great company.

Interestingly, it’s not just the U.S. making a play for him. Rumors out of Mexico suggest Liga MX side Monterrey is also preparing an ambitious offer. And who’s allegedly helping broker that deal? None other than Sergio Ramos, Benzema’s long-time teammate at Real Madrid.

Let’s not forget — Benzema’s legacy is already secured:

  • 354 goals in 648 appearances for Real Madrid — second only to Cristiano Ronaldo

  • 37 goals in 97 matches for the French national team

  • 2022 Ballon d’Or winner

  • Retired from international football in 2022 after missing the World Cup due to injury

Whether Benzema ends up in Miami, Los Angeles, New York, or even Monterrey, one thing is certain: this move could redefine his legacy and give MLS another global superstar to drive its growing popularity.

Brazil's Hunt for a New Coach: Guardiola and Ancelotti Out of Reach

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is facing a challenging search for a new head coach for the national team following the dismissal of Dorival Júnior. Brazil suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier, prompting leadership changes within the team. Now, the CBF is looking for a high-profile manager who can restore Brazil’s dominance on the global stage.

Guardiola: The Dream That Won’t Materialize

One of the most ambitious targets for Brazil’s coaching job was Pep Guardiola, the mastermind behind Manchester City’s recent dominance in European football. With his tactical brilliance and ability to build winning teams, Guardiola would be a dream appointment. However, this remains highly unlikely as he is fully committed to Manchester City and has repeatedly stated his focus on club football. Additionally, his lucrative contract and long-term vision with the Premier League giants make the possibility of a move to Brazil even more improbable.

Ancelotti’s Name Surfaces, but He’s Staying in Madrid

Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti was another top candidate linked to the job, with reports suggesting that the CBF was keen on securing his services. Ancelotti’s calm demeanor, tactical flexibility, and experience at the highest level made him a desirable option. However, despite the speculation, the Italian extended his contract with Real Madrid until 2026. His commitment to the Spanish club rules him out as a potential replacement for Dorival Júnior.

Other Potential Candidates Emerge

With Guardiola and Ancelotti no longer in the picture, the CBF is looking at other options. One of the prominent names being considered is Jorge Jesus, the Portuguese tactician currently managing Al Hilal. Jesus has prior experience in Brazilian football, having led Flamengo to Copa Libertadores glory in 2019. His familiarity with Brazilian football and his success in South America make him a strong candidate for the job.

Other possible contenders include local Brazilian coaches who have a deep understanding of the country's football culture. However, the CBF is reportedly still exploring options before making a final decision.

Brazil’s Urgency to Rebuild

With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, Brazil is under pressure to find a coach capable of leading the squad back to its former glory. The team has struggled in recent years, and fans are eager for a leader who can restore the nation’s footballing identity. The next appointment will be crucial in shaping Brazil’s future and ensuring their competitiveness on the world stage.

For now, the CBF continues its search for the right candidate, but one thing is certain—Guardiola and Ancelotti are no longer in the equation.

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s Road to Recovery After Horror Head Injury

Football fans worldwide held their breath when Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta suffered a terrifying head injury during a match against Millwall. The incident, which drew comparisons to Petr Čech’s infamous skull fracture, left many wondering about Mateta’s future in football. As he embarks on his recovery journey, discussions about player safety, protective gear, and concussion protocols have resurfaced.

Mateta’s injury occurred during a high-intensity clash when he collided head-on with an opponent. The immediate reaction from teammates, medical staff, and fans underscored the severity of the situation. He was swiftly taken off the field for medical assessment, raising concerns about the long-term effects of head trauma in football.

Historical cases like that of former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Čech serve as stark reminders of the dangers of head injuries in football. Čech, who suffered a life-threatening skull fracture in 2006, returned to play with a protective helmet—a symbol of resilience and precaution in the sport. If Mateta is to follow a similar path, he might have to consider wearing protective headgear upon his return.

This incident has reignited conversations around football’s concussion protocols. Many argue that football should adopt stricter measures, similar to those in American football and rugby, to prevent long-term neurological damage in players. Calls for improved protective gear, mandatory recovery periods, and independent medical evaluations have grown louder in the wake of Mateta’s injury.

Despite the setback, Mateta has shown determination in his recovery process. Crystal Palace fans remain hopeful that he will return stronger, possibly with protective gear, as football continues to evolve in ensuring player safety.

Reports suggest that Haaland, while interacting with the matchday mascot before kickoff, unintentionally caused harm. Liverpool's Defensive Future: Who Could Replace Van Dijk If He Departs?

Van Dijk’s Uncertain Future

As speculation mounts over the future of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, discussions are emerging about potential replacements should the Dutch defender leave Anfield this summer. Van Dijk, who has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s defense since his arrival from Southampton in 2018, has played a crucial role in the club’s domestic and European successes. However, with his contract nearing its final stretch and rumors linking him with a move away, Liverpool may soon need to find a suitable successor.

Potential Replacements for Van Dijk

Among the names being considered is Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, a highly-rated young defender who has impressed with his composure and physical presence in the Premier League. While a transfer between city rivals would be controversial, Branthwaite’s defensive abilities and potential for growth make him an attractive option for Liverpool. Other possible candidates include Sporting CP’s Gonçalo Inácio and Juventus' Gleison Bremer, both of whom have been linked with top European clubs due to their strong performances in their respective leagues.

Liverpool’s Defensive Strategy

Liverpool’s defensive strategy will be a key focus for incoming manager Arne Slot, who is set to take over from Jürgen Klopp at the end of the season. If Van Dijk does leave, the club will need to act swiftly to reinforce their backline and maintain their competitive edge. As fans await clarity on the Dutchman’s future, Liverpool’s recruitment team will undoubtedly be assessing potential signings to ensure a seamless transition in defense. Spanish Court Revokes Dani Alves' Conviction

In a major legal turn, former Brazilian football star Dani Alves has had his rape conviction overturned by a Spanish appeals court. The decision comes after an extensive review of evidence and witness testimonies, leading to the annulment of the initial ruling that had sentenced him to four and a half years in prison.

Alves was convicted in February 2024 for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. His trial had gained widespread attention due to his global football status, having played for top clubs like Barcelona, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as representing Brazil in international tournaments.

The appeals court determined that key inconsistencies in the evidence and testimonies raised significant doubts about the validity of the initial verdict. Specifically, video evidence from the nightclub reportedly contradicted some elements of the complainant's testimony, which was central to the prosecution's case. As a result, the court ruled that the standard required to uphold the conviction was not met.

Following his initial conviction, Alves was granted bail after paying €1 million and surrendering his passports. Now, with the case overturned, all restrictions on his movements have been lifted. However, legal experts suggest that the prosecution may still challenge the decision by appealing to Spain’s Supreme Court.

The ruling has sparked debates on Spain’s judicial system, particularly regarding the interpretation of sexual assault laws and the burden of proof required in such cases. Spain had recently implemented legal reforms emphasizing explicit consent in sexual assault cases, making this case a focal point of legal and societal discussions.

At 41, Dani Alves remains one of football’s most decorated players, but this legal battle has significantly impacted his career and reputation. While the ruling offers a legal victory, public opinion remains divided, with some questioning the broader implications of the case on the fight against sexual violence. As developments unfold, the spotlight remains on whether the prosecution will appeal and how Alves navigates life after this high-profile case.
