The United States Embassy in Kenya has advised its citizens to remain vigilant ahead of the June 25 anniversary of the anti-government demonstrations that took place in 2024 and 2025.
In a security advisory released on Thursday, the embassy warned that protests could occur in different parts of the country, with Nairobi's Central Business District and other major urban centres expected to experience heightened activity around the anniversary date.
According to the advisory, any demonstrations could lead to traffic disruptions, road closures, and movement restrictions caused by both protesters and security personnel. American citizens living in or travelling through Kenya have been urged to avoid areas where large crowds are gathering and to stay informed through local media and official updates.
The embassy further encouraged U.S. nationals to review their personal security plans, keep family and friends informed of their whereabouts, and carry valid identification documents, including passports and immigration papers, while moving around the country.
The warning comes as Kenyans prepare to mark one year since the June 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests, which attracted thousands of demonstrators nationwide and sparked widespread debate over taxation, governance, and accountability.
Meanwhile, families of individuals who lost their lives during the 2024 demonstrations have announced plans for peaceful memorial events across the country's 47 counties. On Thursday, relatives of several victims, accompanied by human rights activists and political leaders, delivered a notification to police authorities regarding their planned commemorative march.
The families are seeking justice for those who died, were injured, or reportedly disappeared during the protests. They have also called for investigations and legal action against those found responsible for alleged abuses committed during the demonstrations.
Authorities have not announced any restrictions on public gatherings but have indicated that security agencies will continue monitoring developments ahead of the planned events.
