Lionel Richie has been hospitalized after becoming unwell during a concert in St. Louis, Missouri, with the veteran singer receiving treatment in an intensive care unit.
The 77-year-old music icon performed at The Muny on Saturday, August 29, as part of his ongoing Sing a Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. Near the end of the show, Richie appeared to struggle and asked for a chair before completing his performance of “All Night Long” while seated.
Richie subsequently checked himself into a local hospital for medical tests. Reports citing sources close to the singer said doctors were examining whether dehydration may have contributed to his condition. He was being monitored in the ICU as a precaution, with reports indicating that he was expected to be discharged as early as Tuesday.
The latest hospitalization comes after another health scare earlier this year. In June, Richie became dizzy during a performance in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was unable to finish the show. Two following concerts were postponed while he recovered.
Despite the recent incidents, Richie returned to the stage and continued his North American tour. During his St. Louis performance, he was also seen drinking electrolytes while telling the audience he had been dealing with dehydration.
Richie has not publicly released a detailed statement about his current condition. However, reports from sources close to the singer have indicated that he is doing well and that doctors are hopeful he can leave the hospital soon.
The singer remains scheduled for upcoming performances as part of his tour, although his health situation could affect those plans depending on medical advice.
Richie, a former member of the Commodores who went on to become one of the biggest solo stars of the 1980s, is known for hits including “Hello,” “All Night Long,” “Say You, Say Me” and “Dancing on the Ceiling.” He has also remained a familiar television figure through his role as a judge on American Idol.
