Dolly Parton has been laid to rest beside her late husband, Carl Dean, in a quiet family ceremony in Nashville, bringing a deeply personal close to the life of one of country music’s most recognisable stars.
Parton was buried on Friday, August 28, at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum, where Dean had been laid to rest following his death in March 2025.
The farewell was kept deliberately small, with only close family members attending. The private nature of the ceremony reflected Parton’s wishes for an intimate goodbye rather than a large public funeral.
Parton died on August 25 at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. Her death marked the end of a career that stretched across seven decades and produced some of country music’s most enduring songs.
Her family shares their grief
Following the burial, Parton’s great-niece, Lainey Parton, shared an emotional tribute as she opened up about losing the woman she affectionately called her “granny.”
Lainey recalled how Dolly had supported her from childhood, encouraging her ambitions and making her feel that her dreams were achievable.
She said the singer had a special way of making the people around her feel accepted and loved, a side of Parton that was often less visible than the larger-than-life personality fans saw on stage.
The family has also asked fans and mourners who want to honour Parton to consider donating to her Imagination Library instead of sending flowers.
The literacy programme, founded by Parton, provides free books to children and became one of the most significant parts of her philanthropic legacy.
Back beside Carl Dean
Parton and Dean's relationship was famously private.
The couple met in Nashville in 1964 and married two years later in a small ceremony in Georgia. While Parton became an international superstar, Dean largely stayed away from the entertainment spotlight.
Their marriage lasted nearly six decades, and Parton often spoke about the importance of giving each other space while maintaining their affection and sense of humour.
Dean died at the age of 82 in March 2025. Parton later reflected publicly on how difficult it was to adjust to life without the man she had loved since she was 18.
Now, the couple are together again in the same Nashville mausoleum.
A plaque at the site bears both of their names, along with imagery connected to Parton’s Tennessee roots. Fans have also been able to visit the site, where flowers and messages of remembrance have been left.
Nashville continues to remember Dolly
While Parton’s funeral was private, the public response to her death has been anything but quiet.
A tribute concert at the Grand Ole Opry brought together several performers to celebrate her music, with her niece Jada Star among those paying tribute. Jelly Roll also made a surprise appearance during a performance of Parton’s famous hit “9 to 5.”
Across Nashville and beyond, fans have continued celebrating the singer's music, generosity and unmistakable personality.
For a woman who spent much of her life in the spotlight, Dolly Parton’s final goodbye was remarkably simple — surrounded by family and laid to rest beside the husband with whom she shared nearly 60 years of marriage.
Her public legacy may fill concert halls, record collections and countless memories, but her final resting place tells a quieter story: Dolly and Carl, together again in Nashville.
