Ugandan comedian Anne Kansiime has reacted with amusement to the latest development surrounding operating hours for bars and clubs in Uganda.
Kansiime took to her Instagram Stories after Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, publicly said bars and clubs should be allowed to determine their own opening and closing times.
Her reaction was characteristically playful. Kansiime joked that the development could make her develop even more affection for Muhoozi, before adding a humorous comment about her feelings.
The remarks followed a directive from Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara, who had called for bars and other alcohol-serving establishments to remain closed until 3pm on weekdays. The measure was intended to address concerns over early-morning drinking.
Muhoozi publicly disagreed with the restriction, saying that decisions over when bars and clubs open and close should be left to the proprietors.
He said authorities should instead focus on preventing violence and disorder, while Ugandans should be free to enjoy themselves.
The intervention was acknowledged by Minister Balaam, who responded to Muhoozi's position with the words, “Order taken,” according to the report.
Kansiime's reaction quickly became part of the story, with the comedian turning the policy development into a light-hearted social media moment.
The discussion comes as Uganda continues to debate how nightlife businesses should be regulated, particularly around alcohol consumption, public order and the hours during which entertainment establishments can operate.
For Kansiime, however, the announcement provided another opportunity to bring her trademark humour to a major public conversation.
